Gratitude is the Key to Unlocking Your Manifesting Potential
By Angela Zaffer, MA, LPCC, CHt.
What is Manifesting?
Manifesting is all about intentionally focusing on your desires and attracting them into your life. It operates on the idea that like attracts like—positive thoughts and feelings attract positive experiences, while negative thoughts bring more negativity.
But manifesting isn’t just about wishful thinking. It’s about cultivating a mindset that allows you to align with your desires and take inspired action. And this is where gratitude plays a crucial role.
Manifesting is the practice of aligning your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs with your desires to bring them into reality. In its simplest definition, manifesting means to display or show (a quality or feeling) by one's acts or appearance. manifesting simply means to display, show, exhibit, demonstrate, present, reveal, indicate, express, and declare. When you manifest something, you make your inner thoughts and beliefs outwardly visible. This concept extends beyond emotions and applies to everything you focus on—whether consciously or unconsciously.
Your thoughts, feelings, and actions serve as evidence of what you experience in life. When you align with certain emotions and thoughts—positive or negative—you attract outcomes that mirror what you are thinking and feeling.
Manifesting has become a powerful tool for those looking to create the life of their dreams. Whether it's attracting abundance, love, or success, manifesting is all about aligning your thoughts and emotions with what you desire. But there’s one key element that can truly supercharge your manifesting ability: gratitude.
The Power of Gratitude
Gratitude is the practice of focusing on what you already have and feeling a deep sense of appreciation for it. It shifts your attention away from what’s lacking in your life and highlights the abundance that’s already present.
When it comes to manifesting, gratitude has a profound impact:
Practicing gratitude can supercharge your ability to manifest, helping you demonstrate positive outcomes more effectively by shifting your focus and emotional alignment.
You Are Always Manifesting both Positive and Negative Experiences
It's important to understand that manifesting is not something you can turn on and off. You are manifesting every second of every day, whether you're aware of it or not. Your current life circumstances are a direct reflection of your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. This process applies to both positive and negative experiences. Our outer world is a representation of our inner world.
"Whatever you hold in your mind on a consistent basis is exactly what you will experience in life." Tony Robbins
You are a Magnet for Everything
Emotions are a Manifesting Magnet—it’s what draws experiences and results into your life, whether they are positive or negative. Emotions are resonance, frequency, and vibration. When you align with the emotion of abundance, you attract more abundance; when you align with the emotion of fear or lack, you draw those experiences to you. When you use gratitude, you realign your emotional state of being to a positive state of emotional resonance.
Manifesting is about energetic alignment to with what you want in life—aligning your emotions, thoughts, and energy with what you desire. Whether it's financial abundance, love, or success, your emotional and mental state determines what you attract. You are always a magnet, pulling experiences toward you based on the frequency of your thoughts and emotions. Whether you’re aligned with positivity and abundance or fear and scarcity, determines what manifests in your life.
Example: If you're constantly thinking about how much debt you're in, even if you're trying to manifest wealth, you’re aligning yourself with lack and more debt. Manifesting isn’t just about stating what you want; it’s about what you’re feeling and thinking. Your emotional state of being. This is why focusing on gratitude is so powerful—it helps shift your emotional state toward abundance and positivity.
How Gratitude Enhances Your Manifesting Abilities
1. Gratitude Aligns You with Abundance
When you're in a state of gratitude, you're vibrating on a higher frequency, one that aligns with abundance. Instead of focusing on what you don't have, gratitude helps you focus on what you do have. This shift in focus is powerful because it draws more abundance into your life. The Universe responds to your positive energy, sending you more things to be grateful for.
Example: Imagine you want to manifest financial abundance. Instead of stressing over unpaid bills, if you take time to appreciate the money you already have, you align yourself with the vibration of money. This mental shift opens doors to more opportunities for prosperity.
2. Gratitude Shifts Your Focus from Lack to Abundance
One of the biggest obstacles in manifesting is focusing on what you lack. When you’re constantly thinking about what’s missing, you’re sending out signals of scarcity, which blocks your ability to manifest. Gratitude flips this mindset. By consciously acknowledging what you already have, you create a mental and emotional environment that’s ready to receive more.
Example: If you’re manifesting better health, instead of dwelling on discomfort or illness, express gratitude for the aspects of your body that are functioning well. This shift in perspective attracts healing and wellness.
3. Gratitude Creates a Cycle of Positivity
Gratitude has a snowball effect. The more you practice it, the more you begin to notice even more things to be grateful for. This cycle of positivity reinforces itself, creating a feedback loop where you’re constantly finding new reasons to feel good. The more positive energy you emit, the more positive outcomes you manifest. It’s a self-reinforcing cycle that makes manifesting easier and more effective.
Example: Start a gratitude journal where you write down three things you’re grateful for every day. Over time, you’ll find that this simple practice has a profound impact on your mindset, shifting your focus to the good things in life.
4. Gratitude Elevates Your Vibrational Frequency
The Law of Attraction operates on the principle of "like attracts like." Your vibrational frequency, determined by your emotions, influences what you attract into your life. Gratitude elevates your emotional state, raising your vibrational frequency and making it easier to manifest positive outcomes. It is all about your energy. To manifest successfully, your energy (or vibration) needs to match the frequency of what you desire. Gratitude naturally raises your vibration because it brings positive feelings of joy, contentment, and appreciation into your present moment. These high-vibration emotions are key to attracting more positivity and success into your life.
Example: If you’re trying to manifest romantic love, appreciating the relationships you already have (friends, family, etc.) sends out loving energy, will attract romantic love into your life. By having gratitude for the love you already receive—whether from friends, family, or yourself—will help you attract romantic love. This is because you’re aligning with the energy of love and connection, which is what you desire.
5. Gratitude Helps You Let Go of Resistance
Manifesting often involves overcoming internal resistance, which can take the form of doubt, fear, or frustration. Gratitude helps you release this resistance by focusing on the present moment and appreciating what’s already going well in your life. This creates a mental and emotional space where manifestations can flow more easily. One of the trickiest parts of manifesting is detaching from the outcome. When we obsess over the “how” or the “when” of our desires manifesting, we create resistance. Gratitude helps to release this resistance by allowing you to trust the process. When you’re grateful for what you already have, you cultivate faith in the flow of the Universe. You stop worrying about how things will unfold and start trusting that everything is happening for your highest good.
Example: If you’re manifesting your dream job, expressing gratitude for the skills and experiences you’ve gained in your current role reduces the resistance that comes from frustration or impatience. By being grateful for what you have, you open the door to new opportunities.
How to Embrace Gratitude in the Face of Challenges
to Transform Your Life
Your biggest problem is you think you shouldn’t have them. ...problems are what make us grow. Problems...sculpt our soul.... Every problem is a gift - without problems, we would not grow. ― Tony Robbins
In our journey through life, we encounter numerous challenges, problems, and difficulties—some small and manageable, while others can feel overwhelming and insurmountable. Many people find themselves struggling with devastating health diagnoses, experiencing the loss of loved ones too soon, facing the turmoil of war, or enduring financial hardships. In such moments, the idea of feeling grateful can seem impossible. How can we possibly cultivate gratitude when pain and suffering dominate our reality?
It's not just about what happens; it's about how you cope with what happens and the beliefs you form about the event. All problems can be redefined as an opportunity by shifting our perspectives and beliefs of the event. This is what creates deep transformation. We can rewrite our story from suffering to resilience by shifting our perspective.
“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson
The truth is that shifting your perspective on these events can be a transformative practice. While it may seem counterintuitive, many individuals discover that the difficulties they face are lessons that lead to growth, resilience, and ultimately, a deeper sense of purpose. Challenges and struggles can define who we are by how we show up in the world and the choices we make every day. We can develop compassion, resilience, and wisdom when we overcome our difficulties.
Scars are the road map of the Soul. They show us where we have been, and what we have learned, but do not define where we are going or who we are. --Angela Zaffer
When we over-focus on our challenges, they attract more difficulties and increase experiences of pain and suffering. We always attract what we focus on. We are always an exact vibrational match for what is showing up in our lives. Even if you can't find a way to shift into gratitude over difficult events, focus on what is going well in your life. Shift your focus to small moments. It can be as simple as gratitude for a beautiful flower, a blue sky, or a gorgeous sunset.
The Science Behind Gratitude: Insights
from Psychology and Neuroscience
Gratitude has a profound impact on your brain and mental state, making it easier to align with what you want to manifest. By focusing on what you already have, you strengthen your emotional connection to abundance, which in turn helps you attract more of what you desire. Let's explore the science behind this:
1. Gratitude Rewires the Brain for Positivity and decreases Depression, Anxiety, and Worry
Practicing gratitude has been shown to activate regions of the brain involved in pleasure, reward, and emotional regulation, such as the prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex.
Study: A 2016 study at Indiana University using fMRI scans found that participants who practiced gratitude experienced greater activation in the medial prefrontal cortex. This suggests that gratitude rewires the brain to focus on positive experiences, essential for manifesting what you want.
2. Gratitude Improves Emotional Regulation
Gratitude strengthens emotional regulation, making it easier to stay calm, focused, and positive in challenging situations. This is crucial for manifesting, as staying aligned with your desires—despite external stressors—helps bring those desires into reality.
Study: Research from the University of California, Davis, found that individuals who practiced gratitude regularly had lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and showed higher emotional resilience. This makes it easier to stay focused on what you want rather than getting caught up in negative thought patterns.
3. Gratitude Boosts Dopamine and Serotonin
Gratitude stimulates the release of dopamine and serotonin, the brain’s "feel-good" chemicals. These neurotransmitters create a sense of well-being, elevating your emotional state and allowing you to align with higher vibrations of abundance and positivity.
Study: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that focusing on gratitude significantly increases dopamine production, enhancing mood and motivation. This makes it easier to stay aligned with your desires and amplifies your manifesting power.
4: Practicing Daily Gratitude Changes the Brain in less than 2 weeks
Brain imaging studies show that practicing gratitude for as little as ten days can cause significant changes in brain activity, including changes in blood flow. Regularly writing down or saying five things you are thankful for has been found to increase activity in brain regions associated with emotional processing and reward.
Study: Researchers using fMRI scans discovered that after just ten days of practicing gratitude through journaling, participants showed increased blood flow to the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain involved in decision-making, emotional regulation, and long-term planning. This increase in blood flow suggests that gratitude can rewire the brain to become more efficient at focusing on positive emotions, which enhances the ability to manifest positive outcomes.
By changing the neural pathways through gratitude, you are essentially training your brain to seek out and focus on abundance. This shift not only improves emotional well-being but also optimizes the brain’s ability to manifest your desires, as you will become more aligned with positive outcomes.
Practical Ways to Incorporate
Gratitude in Your Life
1. Start a Gratitude Journal
Write down five things you're grateful for every day. This simple practice not only trains your brain to focus on the abundance in your life but also increases blood flow to key areas of the brain associated with manifesting and decision-making.
2. Gratitude Meditation
Spend a few minutes each day visualizing and feeling grateful for what you have. Imagine yourself surrounded by what you love and desire, and express deep appreciation for it. This helps align your emotions with abundance. If you have trouble meditating, put on a YouTube guided meditation. Here is one from Micheal Sealy.
3. Express Gratitude for What You’re Manifesting
Speak about what you want as if you already have it, and express gratitude for it. For example, instead of saying, “I want more money,” say, “I am grateful for the financial abundance in my life.”
4. Speak Gratitude Affirmations Out Loud (so all of your brain can hear them)
Create a list of gratitude affirmations such as:
"I am grateful for the flow of abundance into my life."
"I am thankful for the opportunities that come my way."
"I appreciate people, places, and situations that bring me love, joy, and happiness."
Reciting these daily will help keep your focus on what’s going well, rather than what’s lacking.
Gratitude is an Energetic Multiplier.
Gratitude is a powerful force that has the potential to increase happiness and joy in our lives, transforming everything. Use this exercise to set your manifesting magnet in your favor for the following day:
Take some time every night before you go to sleep to reflect on your day. only focusing on good positive memories.
If a negative memory shows up, or a worry shows up, place it in an imaginary box for the night.
Replay these positive moments in your mind and genuinely express gratitude for each one.
This practice will help you to fill your days with more good experiences and give you more moments to be grateful for.

He is rich who owns the day, and no one owns the day
who allows it to be invaded with fret and anxiety.
Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day;
begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit
to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

with its hopes and invitations,
to waste a moment on the yesterdays.”
